Clinical Study of the Epistaxis

Abstract
The author studied 135 cases of epistaxis that visited the E, N. T. clinic of Pusan National University Hospital, during last 5 years period from 1965 to 1969.
The results obtained were as follows:
1. The sex distrubution showed 86 cases (63.7%) of male and 49 cases (36.3%) of female.
2. The age distribution of the epistaxis showed 36 cases (26.7%) in 11-20 aged group and 31 cases
(23.0%) in 21-30 aged group, which was most common in young adult.
3. The site of epistaxis was mainly at Locus Kiesselbachii (103 cases,75. 6%) and epistaxis was more frequent on left side (64 cases, 47.4%) than right (57 cases,42.2%), The epistaxis with septum deviation was more frequent on convex side (63%) than concave side (22.2%) and bilateral epistaxis was 14.8%.
4. In the epistaxis cases, local and/or systemic diseases were combined in 70 cases (5,8.5%). In these cases, 27 cases (33.6%)were septal deviation, 18 cases (25.7%) were medical diseases.
5. The causes and provocating factors were washing face (26 cases, 19. 4%), nasal blowing (20 cases, 11.8¡Æ%), fatigue (18 cases, 13.3%) and others (trauma, exercise and rhinitis).
6. In the period of diagnosis from initial epistaxis, i to 3 days were 53 cases (39. 1%), -1 to 6
days were 15 cases (11. 1%). The half of these patients visited the E. N. T. clinic within 6 days. 7. The level of the hemoglobin, coagulation time and bleeding time had no close relation in epistaxis.
